Bleeding gums: An early warning

KDAH

Noticing blood on your toothbrush or gums while brushing or flossing? Don’t ignore it. It could be a sign of gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. This condition leads to gum inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe infection that may result in bone loss, tooth loosening, and even tooth loss. What's more, ongoing gum inflammation has been linked to serious health issues like cardiovascular disease. If your gums continue to bleed, feel tender, or look swollen for more than seven days, consult a dentist. Persistent bad breath can also be a warning sign. Early treatment through professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene can prevent long-term damage.
