Coronary Angiography

Coronary Angiography

A Coronary Angiography or angiogram is a test that helps visualize the flow of blood through the coronary arteries. During the test, a contrast dye is injected into the arteries and the flow of blood through the heart is seen on an X-ray screen. Any blockage in the coronary artery can lead to a heart attack and should be treated immediately.

A Coronary Angiography is indicated in the following scenarios:

  • Heart conditions like myocardial infarction, valvular diseases or heart failure
  • Suspected diagnosis of coronary artery disease
  • Electrocardiogram and stress test show abnormal results
  • Symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath and unusual chest discomfort
  • Before surgery of valvular lesions

Coronary Angiography is performed as an outpatient procedure and patients usually go home the same day. A mild sedative is administered to relax the patient while an ECG monitors the heart rhythm during the procedure. Local anaesthesia is administered at a spot in the groin or arm where a tiny incision is made. A plastic tube or sheath is inserted into the artery. A catheter is passed through the sheath into the blood vessel and carefully guided to the heart. A contrast material (dye) is injected through the catheter which is easily seen on X-rays. Studying these X-rays reveals any blockage in the coronary arteries. Once the angiography is complete, the catheter is removed and a tight bandage is applied at the point of incision.

If the coronary angiography reveals a blockage, percutaneous coronary intervention is done immediately or at a later date. This includes balloon angioplasty or stent insertion that help in keeping the artery open. In cases of multiple blockages, coronary artery bypass grafting is done after consulting a surgeon.

There are no serious complications associated with coronary angiography. Older people or those with existing conditions like diabetes or kidney disease show some of the following complications.

  • Injured blood vessel
  • Low blood pressure
  • Blood clots
  • Stroke
  • Pain and bleeding at the site of incision
  • Allergic reaction to dye
