Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)

Minimally invasive spine surgery or MISS is a type of surgery performed on the bones of the spine through smaller incisions. It accomplishes the same goals as open surgery but in a faster and safer way. The biggest advantage of minimally invasive spine surgery is faster recovery time compared to regular surgery.

Minimally invasive spine surgery has several benefits over traditional open spine surgery. These include:

  • Reduced trauma to the muscles and soft tissues
  • Less blood loss during surgery
  • Reduced risk of post-surgical infection and pain
  • Faster recovery from surgery
  • Less pain at surgical site
  • Better cosmetic results due to smaller incisions
  • Lesser need for rehabilitation

The vertebrae, discs and spinal nerves are deeply located inside the body and so the muscle tissue around them needs to be moved to reach there. This is done by making a small incision closer to the part that needs to be operated. A tubular retractor is put into the incision and instruments and/or microscopic video cameras are guided into the body through it. The necessary repair is done and the tools and retractor are removed. The incision is closed with sutures and a small bandage is applied to the wound.

A majority of back problems do not require surgery. However, if the problem persists after medications and other therapies, a surgery may be recommended. Common spine conditions that can be treated with minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Herniated disc
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis)
  • Spondylosis
  • Fracture of the vertebra
  • Spinal deformities
  • Infections of the spine
  • Tumours of the spine

You can consult a minimally invasive spine surgery specialist for further evaluation.

Recovery after MISS is faster compared to open surgery. The decision to return to daily activities depends on the age of the person, occupation and type of surgery. A person with a sedentary job and minor surgery can return to work within 1-2 weeks while others may require 4-6 weeks. Physical therapy should be started 2 weeks after surgery as it promotes recovery.
